Peter Vladimirovich Stegniy Has Reposed in the Lord

On Saturday, December 27, after receiving Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ, Peter Vladimirovich Stegniy — former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to the State of Israel, diplomat, orientalist, scholar, and author of numerous works on Russian history and diplomacy — reposed in the Lord.

On December 30, the day of his burial, a memorial service (panikhida) was served in Jerusalem at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane, in the presence of the Head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Archimandrite Roman (Krasovsky).

Peter Vladimirovich served as Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the State of Israel for five years. It seemed that his ascent to Jerusalem was preceded by his entire diplomatic career in the Middle East, as well as by an extraordinary scholarly vocation uncommon for a modern diplomat — one marked by deep immersion in historical sources, archives, and literature.

All who knew this devoted laborer and zealous servant of the Holy Land remember his complete openness, his readiness for dialogue, and his willingness to help. Hierarchs, clergy, monastics, diplomats, scholars, artists, actors, and journalists alike found in him an exceptional and engaging interlocutor, a teacher, and a wise critic.

His presence illuminated everyone around him wherever he appeared. He did not seek fame and remained a remarkably modest and refined man.

It was Peter Vladimirovich Stegniy who succeeded in securing the return of the Sergievskoe Compound in Jerusalem to Russian ownership. He took an active part in the life of the Russian monasteries of the Holy City and frequently visited and prayed at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane, where the relics of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna repose. One of his books is dedicated to the history of the transfer of the relics of the New Martyr Elizabeth and the nun Barbara from Siberia to Jerusalem.

The clergy and monastics of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia gratefully remember Peter Vladimirovich for his support and assistance throughout his entire period of service in the Holy Land.

This mutual friendship and love, which began in Jerusalem, continue to this day and will endure henceforth.

Eternal memory to the tireless Russian Orthodox laborer in the vineyard of Christ.
