The first week of Lent was spent in prayer and listening to the teachings of the holy fathers in the monasteries of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission.
The head of the REM, Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), spent the first three days at the Holy Ascension Convent on the Mount of Olives. In the appointed places of the Lenten services, Fr. Roman read patristic teachings and lives of the ancient ascetics. On Wednesday, together with the clergy of the monastery, Fr. Roman served the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts for this year.
From Wednesday evening, the Head of the Mission read the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete and also conducted services and readings of teachings at the Gethsemane Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene. On Friday, after the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, a prayer service was served to St. Theodore of Tyro with the blessing of koliva. On Friday evening, all the sisters of both monasteries went to confession and on Saturday morning they received the Holy Mysteries of Christ.
