130 Anniversary of the Repose of Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin)

On Saturday March 24 / April 6, the day of the fore-feast of the Annunciation, after Liturgy, a memorial service was served at the grave of Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), located in the Church of the Ascension of the Lord on Mount Olivet, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the repose of the “Great Collector” of Russian Palestine.

Father Antonin carried his obedience as the Head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem from 1865 until his death in 1894. The name of Archimandrite Antonin is included in the golden fund of the history of the Russian Church, science and culture. Father Antonin is rightly called the founding father of the Russian Orthodox presence in the Holy Land.

The memorial service was led by the Head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), co-served by the clergy of the Mission, Hieromonk Gerasim (Kotovsky) and Hierodeacon Amphilochius (Mazur). Abbess Varvara (Novikova) and the sisters of the Convent prayed at the memorial service. They also commemorated the parents of Father Antonin - Priest John and Maria Kapustin, as well as the ever-memorable Reader Mikhail, Major General of the Tsarist Army, Mikhail Andreevich Khripunov, Chairman of the Orthodox Palestine Society, who died on the same day, April 6,1983 in Gethsemane at the monastery of St. Mary Magdalene where he was buried.

In the monastery of St. Mary Magdalene a memorial service was also served for them.

On the afternoon of the same day, a memorial service at the grave of Archimandrite Antonin was celebrated by Archimandrite Vassian (Zmeev), head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission of the Moscow Patriarchate, and he was concelebrated by the brethren of the Moscow Mission.
