Remembrance of the 1927 Earthquake

On June 28/July 11, at the Holy Ascension Convent, on the day of the celebration of the icon of the Mother of God “Of the Three Hands”, the sisters prayerfully remembered the day of the disastrous earthquake of 1927, in which about 400 people parished and brought enormous destruction to the region. Miraculously, the bell tower "Russian Candle" on the Mount of Olives did not collapse.

Every year on this day on Olivet a service is held for the “Salvation from the Great Earthquake”, i.e. in memory of the earthquake that happened in Constantinople in 740, which according to the typikon is to be served on October 26 in conjunction with the service of the Mother of God.

Following to the Liturgy, a procession with the icon “Of the Three Hands” was held around the entire area of the monastery and sprinkled it with holy water.

Afterwards, in front of the temple, 3 prayers were read for “Salvation from an Earthquake.”
