On June 21, at the Russian House at the Sergiev Compound in Jerusalem, another meeting of the Jerusalem Orthodox Seminar was held on the topic: “On the Question of the Glorification and Veneration of the Head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin).”
The role of Father Antonin in the creation of the Russian spiritual presence in the Holy Land cannot be overstated. Thanks to the inexhaustible charisma and many rich talents bestowed upon him from above, he created the Russian spiritual presence in the Holy Land. This includes the shrines acquired by Father Antonin, the preaching of the Gospel, new churches and monasteries, missionary and scholarly activity, care for pilgrims, pastoral care of the flock, peacemaking, and a selfless life for the good of the Church and the Fatherland. This is perhaps only the most modest list of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that Father Antonin undoubtedly possessed.
Today, more than 150 years later, all Russian spiritual and cultural heritage in the Holy Land is associated precisely with the name of Father Antonin.
It was this topic that the seminar at the Sergiev Compound was devoted to.
Before the meeting began, a memorial litia was served for the ever-memorable Archimandrite Antonin. After the joint prayer, the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem of the Russian Church Abroad, Archimandrite Roman (Krasovsky), delivered a welcoming address. Father Roman, in particular, said that the Orthodox community still has to discover for itself a new, as yet little-studied spiritual image of Father Antonin. We study in great detail his ecclesiastical, diplomatic, scholarly, and cultural activity, but speak much less about his spiritual Christian feat, his holiness, and his prayerful intercession. Father Roman urged everyone present to remember the ever-memorable Archimandrite Antonin in prayer more often.
Then the abbot of the Dormition Dalmatov Monastery, Igumen Barnabas (Averyanov), spoke. To date, Father Barnabas is one of the leading specialists in the study of the spiritual legacy of Archimandrite Antonin. He shared his research experience and spoke about the work related to the possible glorification of Archimandrite Antonin among the saints in his homeland — in Dalmatovo.
The main speaker at the seminar was Kirill Alexeyevich Vakh, a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and deputy head of the Scientific Section of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society. In a very engaging manner, Kirill Alexeyevich revealed to the audience the spiritual image of Father Antonin, from the period of his studies at the Kyiv Theological Academy to the Jerusalem period of his ministry.
After the presentations, an interesting and substantive discussion took place.
